WHICH power AFFECTS in you?
FOREWORD
Have you ever thought or been in
doubt as to which power is affecting in you? Have you thought from which source
your ‘gifts’ are coming if, for example, healing and other special issues take
place through you? It is good to take into consideration the fact that even if
someone sincerely thought that he is transmitting the power of ‘Christ and the
Holy Spirit’, this does not guarantee that the gifts are always from God: Satan
namely may easily imitate healing, prophesying, speaking in tongues, the
message of knowledge, and other spiritual gifts mentioned by the Bible. He can
give these imitation gifts to people, so that they would go astray and further
from God.
In addition, the descriptions
of the Bible indicate the same. One of the examples is Simon the Sorcerer, who
is mentioned in Chapter 8 of the Acts of the Apostles. This man caused wonders
with the help of magic and in front of other people so that these people
supposed that Simon acted with the help of God. However, the power in him was
not the power of the Holy Spirit, but he was astray all the time. (Another
well-known story is that of the magicians of the pharaoh; these magicians who
practiced sorcery were able to make similar miracles as Moses.) Among
others, the next verses refer to him:
- (Acts 8:9-13) But there was a certain
man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and
bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they
all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great
power of God.
11 And to him
they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with
sorceries.
12 But when they believed
Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of
Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon
himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and
wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
In
addition, we do not need to do anything else than look at the own words of
Jesus about this issue: He stated that in the last judgment, many people would
appear who had prophesied and done wonderful works in His name; people whom
Jesus would not know, in other words, who were not His own. These verses prove
very well the point that even if someone sincerely thinks that he is acting in
the power of God, he can be completely astray:
- (Matt 7:22,23) Many will say to me in
that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your
name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will
I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.
