Deliverance from bondage

When a person is saved, he is not always released from all bonds. Satan may still disturb him, and he may lack the peace promised by Jesus

- (Rom 14:17) For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

- (John 14:27) Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: not as the world gives, give I to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

- (John 10:10) The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

This text goes over deliverance from all evil bondages. There can be a number of different obstacles hindering people. One obstacle preventing change can be the devil and demons’ hold. A person might be bound spiritually without them even properly realizing it. That is, when a person turns to God and Jesus Christ and wants to be saved, it is not as straightforward that it would automatically deliver them from all of their bondages, and that their life would be peaceful and calm after. On the contrary, many have experienced melancholy, restlessness, obsessions, difficulty reading the Bible and praying, and even hearing voices in their heads. They might go through a constant battle in their mind, and not have the peace and ease that the Bible promises. They might have blamed it, e.g., on their temper, an illness, past experiences, or on chemistry, but the thought has not crossed their mind that it could all be due to a spiritual battle over their mind.

Neil T. Anderson tells his observations after his vast experiences with spiritual support. He tells the kinds of struggles Christians might go through after conversion. They are not automatically free from all bondages, and that is why they have needed special spiritual support and deliverance:

I have had hundreds of people come to me for spiritual support, people who have battled with their mind. Some have difficulty concentrating while reading the Bible, some might really hear “voices”, or they struggle with accusatory and judgmental thoughts. Excluding a few rare exceptions, these battles have proven out to be spiritual battles over the human mind… It is childish to claim that Christians could not begin to follow misleading spirits. It happens all over the world. I have, for the past 15 years, helped with spiritual support practically over a thousand recognized Christians who have had battles in their minds. Some have only struggled with praying and reading the Bible. Others have heard voices. Passing this off as merely a kind of chemical imbalance means that we are taking away the purpose of congregation as the liberator of prisoners. If all negative thoughts are merely carnal ways, why do these thoughts disappear when believers do the will of God and oppose the Devil? Carnal ways are deeply rooted, and they do not disappear in a snap of fingers. (1)

There are a number of reasons why some people are still bound after many years of being saved. The following reasons might be the most prominent:

Deceit of the devil.  The most impactful reason is the deceit of the devil. When we read the Bible, we can see how he is deceitful and misleads people to believe his lies. The Bible also tells us how the whole world is dominated by evil, how Satan is the god of this world, and how the god of devilment works in the children of disobedience. These kinds of verses show us how big of an impact the lies of the devil have on the lives of people who live on this earth:

- (2 Cor 4:3,4) But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4 In whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine to them.

- (2 Cor 3:14-16) But their minds were blinded: for until this day remains the same veil not taken away in the reading of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ.

15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, the veil is on their heart.

16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away.

- (Acts 26:17,18) Delivering you from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom now I send you,

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

- (Eph 2:1,2) And you has he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2 Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience:

- (1 John 5:19) And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in wickedness.

What happens when a person receives salvation? Usually, they learn to know the truth and become liberated from the chains of evil. However, no believer has perfect knowledge from the start about spiritual matters (e.g., why congregations have teachers) and they might not be completely delivered from the things that they have done or experienced in the past – they can still bind them making them need deliverance. In fact, few people are in complete deliverance or in the state in which Paul and the first apostles wandered after Pentecost. We are far from the deliverance and spiritual life that they represented.

The worldview people have affects whether they believe in demons and the existence of supernatural. A kind of worldview that rejects supernatural is dominant in the Western world, where people try to explain everything through natural causes. For instance, in terms of mental illnesses, people do not take into consideration that some of them might be caused by spiritual reasons and not by natural reasons only. People completely deny any existence of supernatural entities.

Whereas, the Eastern countries and Africa are different in this regard, as people are aware of the existence of the spiritual world. They usually believe in the existence of spirits and supernatural, but only the congregations in these countries have the solutions as to how to liberate someone from the chains of evil. It happens through Jesus.

The lack of spiritual gifts, such as not having the gift of distinguishing between spirits, is one reason behind spiritual blindness. If we do not receive spiritual knowledge and understanding from God, we are like blind guiding the blind if we try to help people. It is difficult to solve conflicts if one does not understand the reasons behind it. That is why we need wisdom from God to lead people towards deliverance.

A story about the Indonesian revival from many decades ago shows how God can give the ability to see spiritually, to help people be delivered. Revivals often lead to people realizing the lies and chains that bind them. Deliverance is found through knowing Jesus and the truth.

During those weeks, the Lord let us see clearly the reality of sin, original sin, the curse of God that affects the third and fourth generation, occultic curse, and distress caused by demons… Some asked: Doesn’t, for example, the curse of God that was caused by our ancestors’ witchcraft stop by itself, when a person is reborn in Christ? Isn’t it diminishing to the meaning of salvation if we still try to free someone from witchcraft after salvation? The tale of Lazarus gives us the answers to these questions. Even though Lazarus was given the gift of life by Jesus, he was not able to move properly before he was released from the shrouds. This task Jesus appointed to the people who had seen how Lazarus was awakened from the dead. We experienced the same in a very tangible manner with one of our students. Many who went through rebirth did not feel real joy about their salvation and were not able to strive spiritually. But when they were released from their “shrouds”, they became happy and strong vessels of God. We saw Jesus’ appointed task to his followers and the power to deliver people in a whole new light. Perhaps, this is the answer to many questions that churches and Christians around the world tackle with. (2)

symptoms from oppression.  When a person is bound and oppressed by the devil, it can cause different symptoms in their life. These symptoms might be different in terms of severity. We can see an extreme case in the fifth chapter of Mark about the Gerasene man who was entirely possessed by evil spirits and was not able to control his life at all. He did not live in a normal state, as the spirits were talking through him and tormented his life.

It is much more common, however, that people are mainly free, but feel restricted in a few areas. Primarily, they live a normal life, but they might not have that peace inside them, or they might have some other problems – most people belong in this category.

We are going to bring up a few most prominent symptoms that can be linked to demonic oppression. These symptoms are some of the most severe ones, but they can have milder manifestations.

Physical symptoms include: vertigo, loss of consciousness, headache, loss of memory and moments of unconsciousness, feeling heavy or general pain all over the body. These symptoms are especially common when a person starts to seek deliverance and turns to God. Those with an occultist background – either because of their own actions or due to occultism in the family – find these symptoms common.

Some illnesses, like epilepsy, deafness and muteness can sometimes be an attack of the devil and thus caused by evil spirits, although these illnesses might also have a medical explanation or they could be caused by an accident which has nothing to do with evil spirits.

Inner symptoms include:

• Great difficulties in praying and reading the Bible. One can even lose consciousness.

• Repeated nightmares that may involve snakes, death and other scary things.

Uncontrolled outbursts of anger, sexual daydreams, intense fear, or any sin or lust that is above normal. These things are a part of our sinful nature, but sometimes the enemy may act in the background to gain ground because of our former sins.

Illusions, confusion or visions are common.

Feeling intense fear, doubts and pain.

Self-destructive behavior and suicidal thoughts.

Obsessions where an internal need drives a person to say or do things that are contrary to his or her basic nature. Especially, blasphemous thoughts and deeds occur.

• Voices that are accusatory, blasphemous or threatening order a person to do something that will hurt himself or to do something humiliating. Often these voices may resemble our own thoughts or internal dialogue but express ideas completely opposite from what we would normally think.

In pastoral care, a person may in his mind experience threats, accusations or false statements such as, "This won't work!” “Get out from here!” or “You can never be freed!” Internal resistance to pastoral help is powerful.

Reactions to the Holy Spirit. If the Holy spirit is active in a gathering, a bound person might have a strong reaction to it. Such reactions might include seizures, convulsions, screaming and shrieking, hissing and crawling like a snake, self-harming or dangerous behavior towards others, sexual movements, mockery and swearing, making animalistic noises, vomiting, experiencing pain throughout the whole body, laying on the ground like a dead body…

Where do these bondages come from?

- (Eph 4:27) Neither give place to the devil.

When a person is in bondage, there is always a reason for it. These bondages do not happen coincidentally, as they are related to the person’s life and actions, what they have experienced, and what has happened in their family. Somewhere there has been an open portal that has allowed the devil to affect a person’s life. Here are a few of the major portals:

- (Deut 18:10-12) There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

12 For all that do these things are an abomination to the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD your God does drive them out from before you.

- (Lev 19:31) Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

- Lev 20:6) And the soul that turns after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

Occultism, which connects people to the spiritual world, is one of the most substantial portals. People with a background in occultism find it the hardest to turn to God. They might go through great battles and it might feel like they are up against a wall. The most common areas of occultism include:

• Black and white magic with their spells, Wicca, witchcraft, devil worship, satanism, blood oath and other oaths, self-mutilation, walking on fire, shamanism, voodoo

• Spiritism, spirit guides, Ouija boards, trance phenomena, psychography, UFOs, astral trips, hypnosis, levitation, moving objects without touching them

• Non-Christian movements like Hindi movements, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Monism, Mormonism and Freemasonry. The two latter entail oaths that people need to break.

• Viewing things through a dowsing rod or a pendulum. Foretelling from cards, the hand, a crystal ball, tea leaves or from intestines (Santeria religion)

• Tarot cards, zodiac signs and astrology, divination, psychometry, telepathy, or visiting a fortune teller or a psychic.

• Yoga and transcendence thinking and all methods that are used to take the mind into a passive state or where an empty mind is required. Many martial arts belong in this group. People who are used to being in occultism are familiar with emptying their mind to make way for spirits to act through them.

Occultic books, toys (e.g., monster toys resemble idols and demons in Hinduism) and games, such as role-playing games. Heavy metal music and hard rock music have also led some people to occultism and left them in bondage.

• Psychic healing, energy healing (sheer neutral energy cannot heal illnesses), visiting a healer, alternative medicine (treatments that have no medical support), acupuncture and biofeedback. Many end up in bondage unknowingly when they let themselves be healed through occultic methods.

• Herbs. Some herbs found in stores have been treated with spells.

• Creating imagery, i.e., visualization where images are created, e.g., healing (e.g., small men come and destroy a tumor), is an occultist method. God’s answers to prayers come through faith in the Word’s promises, not by visualizing.

• Objects. If a person has objects used for idolatry in their home, or objects that have spells on them, those objects may operate as a stronghold for evil spirits. Many of these objects may be neutral in themselves, but if they are connected to spells, they will bring a strain over the home – a strain that will not go away until the object has been removed. Most commonly these objects may include the following:

Astrologic, spiritualistic, and magical literature

Many souvenirs such as idols and statues, fetishes, magic drums, and masks of the devil

Objects placed under one’s skin such as metal needles can be a sign of the worship of Satan, or to the religious practices of primitive people. One should have these kinds of objects removed by a doctor, or ask the Lord to take them away because they provide a channel for evil spirits.

• Talismans, amulets, and magic tools

• There are also non-occult objects received as gifts that can carry a curse and can be difficult to identify unless God gives the person a special gift of discernment. These objects themselves may be neutral, but the curse connected to them can bring a burden into one’s home and life.

- (Deut 7:25,26) The graven images of their gods shall you burn with fire: you shall not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it to you, lest you be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD your God.

26 Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be a cursed thing like it: but you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

- (Acts 19:17-19) And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and showed their deeds.

19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Unforgiveness is perhaps one of the biggest reasons why many end up bound by the devil. When a person holds on to anger, bitterness, blame and does not want to forgive, it gives the devil an opportunity to enter their life. One might not know where their current distress is coming from, because it can be caused by wrong choices in the past. That is why Paul warned us that the Sun should not set on hatred, because that offers a doorway for the devil. We should be aware of the devil’s devices against us:

- (2 Cor 2:10,11) To whom you forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

- (Eph 4:26,27) Be you angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down on your wrath:

27 Neither give place to the devil.

The most serious part about unforgiveness is that it leaves people outside the gates of heaven. If one cannot forgive and does not want to let go of the blame, they cannot enter the kingdom of God. Anyone who hates their brother is a murderer according to the Bible, and they do not possess an eternal life. That is why we need to choose forgiveness towards everybody. It should also include our relationship with ourselves. That is, if hatred towards our neighbor is wrong, it is also wrong to hate ourselves, which includes thoughts about suicide. We should reform ourselves from both of these wrongful thoughts.

- (Matt 6:12) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

- (Matt 6:14,15) For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15 But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

- (Matt 18:32-35) Then his lord, after that he had called him, said to him, O you wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you desired me:

33 Should not you also have had compassion on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you?

34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due to him.

35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also to you, if you from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

- (Hebr 12:15) Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

- (1 Cor 13:4,5) Charity suffers long…

5 is not easily provoked, thinks no evil

- (1 John 3:15) Whoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Those involved in spiritual support work have noticed how unforgiveness is one of the major reasons behind spiritual bondage. It gives Satan the most opportunities to influence people’s lives. The way to take away that opportunity is to forgive and let go of the blame.

Neil T. Anderson: Satan exploits those who do not forgive. I have helped thousands of people to find freedom in Christ and I can attest to unforgiveness being the main reason why people stay shackled to their past… Everyone I have spiritually supported has had one or more people they need to forgive. I believe that unforgiveness gives Satan the biggest doorway to enter the congregation. If we cannot help people to forgive in their heart, we cannot help them become free from their past. Someone said: “Forgiveness is the release of prisoners where we find ourselves to have been the prisoner.” (3)

Don Basham: Time and again I have seen deliverance coming to a halt because of an unforgiving attitude in the person who seeks deliverance; In the same way, I have seen numerous times people being delivered when they finally forgive. Satan and his spawns are law-minded. They know their rights. For as long as a person holds on to anger, grudge, and unforgiveness in their heart, demons have the right to stay inside them; bitterness and anger form a “ground” they can stay on: it is their territory. (4)

Carlos Annacondia: Seventy percent of the people who suffer with spiritual problems and end up in our deliverance tent have hatred, anger, and bitter roots in their hearts. These are the main causes for illnesses and distress in people’s lives. The majority of them will heal physically, once they find inner reform through forgiveness.

Inspect your own heart. You might find anger towards your spouse, cousin, relative, neighbor, brother or sister. Anger and grudge bring about punishment. Many times, they are the reason for illnesses, which seem to not come out of nowhere. Whatever your anger might be, Jesus forgave and told us to do the same. If we refuse to do so, we are disobedient towards His word and we will be condemned. Forgiveness is not a feeling; it is a decision. If you want to forgive, the Lord will help you do so.

I have prayed for people broken down by illnesses, and they have become healthy the moment they stopped praying and decided to forgive. It is tremendous how the power of God works through forgiveness. Do not let the devil use your feelings to bring sickness into your life. (5)

other sins. Occultism and unforgiveness are two major factors that leave people in bondage. They are perhaps the biggest causes that give the devil the right to interfere with people’s lives. We should confess them as sins and let go of them, in order to be delivered.

There are also other gateways that give the devil an opportunity affect people’s lives. This includes sin committed by the person themselves, and what other people have done to them. We are going to look at a few of the most common gateways.

Sexual sins can lead to demonic defilement. Like sexually transmitted diseases and other diseases can transfer from people to people through sexual intercourse (AIDS, gonorrhea…), demons can do the same. God has given us an order to get away from all fornication, in order to protect ourselves. Fornication includes all sexual relations outside of marriage. It also includes sex with the same sex, pornography and masturbation (sin of the lust), or sex with animals and demons. Major gateways causing people to end up in bondage against their will and causing difficult emotional traumas, include incest and rape. Recovering from those might take years.

- (1 Cor 6:16-18) What? know you not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body?  for two, said he, shall be one flesh.

17 But he that is joined to the Lord is one spirit.

18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man does is without the body; but he that commits fornication sins against his own body.

- (Rev 2:21) And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.

- (Lev 18:22) You shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

- (2 Tim 3:1-4) This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

- (Hebr 13:4) Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Drugs and drinking can also function as gateways. Drug users often have experiences similar to what occurs after years of meditation in Eastern countries’ religions. Former Hindi guru Rabi Maharaj tells in his book The Death of a Guru how he came across this phenomenon after meeting Western drug users:

This way I began to meet even more drug users and made an astonishing discovery: Some of them had similar experiences when under drug influence, as I did in my day of doing yoga and meditation! I was astounded listening to them describing the “beautiful and peaceful world” they were able to enter with the help of LSD; a world which’ psychedelic visions and colors I was all too familiar with. Of course, many of them also had had bad experiences, but most drug users seem as reluctant to take into consideration these warnings as I was, when practicing yoga.

“I did not need substances to see visions of other worlds or supernatural beings or to feel unity with the universe or to feel that I am “God”, I told them. “I achieved all that through transcendental meditation. But it was a lie, a trick of the evil spirits, with which they took a hold of me when I freed my mind from my own control. You are being deceived. The only way to the peace and satisfaction that you are looking for is through Christ.” Since I knew what I was talking about and had experienced it myself without drugs, many of these drug users took my words seriously. (6)

Self-hate, self-blame and self-pity can also function as gateways for evil. The issue with these sins, as with bitterness, is that people do not often realize that they are sin. That is if hating others and blaming them is wrong, it is also wrong to do that to yourself. One should repent from both sins.

These attitudes, like bitterness towards other people, are often a result of difficult life experiences, but they are still wrong in the eyes of God.

When we prayed for the woman, for her to be delivered from all her guilt and bondages, the Holy Spirit expressed a strong spirit of self-hate. When the woman tried to say: “The spirit of self-hate, I renounce you in the name of Jesus”, she literally could not say the words. Her face turned red, she grabbed herself by the throat. She battled to say: Self-hate out in the name of Jesus”. I said quickly: “Satan I bind you in the name of Jesus. You have no power over this woman. We appeal to the blood of Jesus that has bled for this woman. You must let go of her immediately.” By the power of God, Satan let go of her this instant. The woman said: You know, it was like someone had said inside of me: ‘I will not come out of you. I will not leave, because this is my home. I will not leave’. Once we had prayed for her inner reform, she left the town and continued her journey across the world. The Lord did an amazing thing in her, and after some time she returned home. She wanted her marriage to continue. She wanted to change and be the kind of wife she should be. We have received many letters from her. She still rejoices about the Lord and is still serving Him. (7)

Pride, envy and rebellion can also function as gateways for evil. Pride is easily misleading, just as Satan was misled because of his pride. One might think they are better, more blessed, more spiritual and more advanced than other people, but that is where the danger lies. Peter and James write:

- (1 Peter 5:8,9) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:

9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brothers that are in the world.

- (James 4:6,7) But he gives more grace. Why he said, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

We have an example of envy in king Saul, as an evil spirit entered him at the end when he fell away from faith. He abandoned the will of God and could not stand that David received more praise than him.

- (1 Sam 18:7-12) And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came on Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand.

11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

12 And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

What about rebelliousness? It was the first sin of Lucifer, Satan, when he in his pride turned against God. To avoid this attitude, we must first surrender to the will of God, as Jesus taught us in the Lord’s Prayer: Your kingdom come, Your will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (Matt 6:10).

Moreover, the Bible teaches to have respect for our superiors. We can see this in the following areas. If we do not respect our superiors, we rebel against God, and in that case, we cannot expect Him to help us with our problems:

Superior authority

- (Rom 13:1,2) Let every soul be subject to the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

 - (1 Peter 2:13-17) Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

14 Or to governors, as to them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

- (Ecc 10:20) Curse not the king, no not in your thought; and curse not the rich in your bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which has wings shall tell the matter.

- (Matt 15:1-6) Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

2 Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

3 But he answered and said to them, Why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

4 For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and mother: and, He that curses father or mother, let him die the death.

5 But you say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatever you might be profited by me;

6 And honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have you made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

- (Eph 6:1-3) Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

2 Honor your father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

3 That it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.

Wife’s respect for her husband and a husband’s love

- (Eph 5:22-25) Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the savior of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

- (Col 3:18,19) Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

- (1 Peter 3:1,7) Likewise, you wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

7 Likewise, you husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Man’s respect for Christ

- (1 Cor 11:3) But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Congregation leaders

- (1 Tim 5:17,18) Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.

18 For the scripture said, You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn. And, The laborer is worthy of his reward.

- (1 Peter 2:18,19) Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the fraudulent.

19 For this is thank worthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

Emotional crisis and difficult life experiences can also function as a gateway. If someone is subjected to abuse or rejection, they might develop a fear for people. Or if they have been in a traumatic accident or in a traumatic event, they might also develop a great fear towards similar situations. For instance, fear of dogs, fear of water, and fear of death can be set off from a traumatic experience. People might also have nightmares about their difficult experiences.

Even more common are anxiety inducing fears that are based on past experiences. An example: A mature Christian woman was afraid of death. Since she had strong faith and had a close connection with God, there did not seem to be any apparent reason for her fear. The Spirit of God revealed that when she was taken to a dead man’s house when she was six, she had experienced a wave of fear and run out of the room choking and gasping for air. This fear troubled her for years. (8)

Furthermore, Paul mentioned that a spirit can be related to a fear. He wrote to Timothy:

- (2 Tim 1:7) For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Depression can be similar. It can be connected to our temper and our circumstances (Paul was also depressed and afraid from time to time: For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fights, within were fears. Nevertheless God, that comforts those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus, 2 Cor 7:5,6), but there could also be an underlying spirit of depression. Sometimes it might be linked to difficult childhood experiences, sometimes to occultism or to other sins. Derek Prince tells his own experience:

I was upon a crucial moment in my life. I had always thought my depression and negative attitude were expressions of my nature, something that I was born with. I had felt guilty over not being a “better” Christian. Now it occurred to me that my fight was not against a part of my personality.

Immediately, the Holy Spirit brought to my mind the promise in Joel 3:5: “whoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered” I decided the promise was for me and I acted accordingly. I said a simple prayer, which went something like this: “Lord, you have showed me that the spirit of depression has depressed me, but You have promised in Your word that those who call on Your name, will be delivered. Therefore, I call you to deliver me in the name of Jesus!”

The answer came in that instant. It was like an immense heavenly vacuum had come over me and sucked away all that gray mist that had surrounded my head and shoulders. I was free! For my whole life I had been distressed. It felt strange to be delivered. It quickly came clear to me, however, that it was normal to be free and that anxiousness was not normal.

My old enemy did not let go of me that easily. I still had to fight against depression. But the great difference this time was that the attacks came from the outside and not from within. Slowly, I learnt to resist them.

The main objective of the attacks was to make me act pessimistic and to make me have a pessimistic attitude. When everything seemed to go wrong, I began to harbor negative thoughts about what would happen. All too suddenly I felt that familiar mist setting on my head and shoulders again.

In that stage God taught me another valuable lesson: He would do the things for me that I was unable to do, but He would not do what He wanted me to do. God had answered my call and delivered me from the spirit of depression, but now it was my responsibility to practice biblical discipline in terms of my thoughts. (9)

Curses. Curses, magic and spells are common in countries where witchcraft is practiced. The problem with them is that they are difficult to detect. But one can still be delivered from those bondages as well, when they surrender their life to God and resist all powers of the devil in the name of Jesus. The following letter by an anonymous person describes this situation well:

I have just recovered from a terrible attack of the enemy. Bleeding, heart disease, heart beating and exhaustion. My whole being is in a state of collapse. Suddenly, I remembered in prayer to pray against all psychic powers focused upon me (psychic 'prayer'). In faith and by the power of the blood of Jesus, I cut myself off that, and the result was surprising. Suddenly my breathing was normal, the bleeding stopped, the exhaustion disappeared, all the pain left and life returned to my body. Since that moment, I have been refreshed and become stronger. God let me know that my condition was due to a group of betrayed souls in opposition against me who directed their 'prayers' against me. God has used me to release two of them, but the others are still in a terrible abyss... “ (10)

Illnesses might be caused by natural causes, or they can be caused by spiritual forces. If someone has bad hearing, it can be completely normal – e.g., damage to the auditory organs – but sometimes it can be a result of supernatural influence. When we read the Bible, we can see how some illnesses were really caused by the devil. In such cases it is not wrong to oppose the sickness and tell it to leave (a normal way to pray for the ill is to place hands over them). Moreover, one can ask God for healing. Before all that we must, however, seek the will of God and confess all our conscious sins to Him. This is always the order, as stated in the Epistle of James (James 4:7: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.).

- (Mark 9:25) When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying to him, You dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

- (Matt 12:22) Then was brought to him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, so that the blind and dumb both spoke and saw.

- (Matt 15:22,28) And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried to him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, you son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, O woman, great is your faith: be it to you even as you will. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

- (Matt 4:24) And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought to him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

 - (Luke 8:2) And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

- (Luke 6:18,19) And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

- (Luke 7:21) And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and to many that were blind he gave sight.

- (Acts 5:16) There came also a multitude out of the cities round about to Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

- (Acts 19:11,12) And God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 So that from his body were brought to the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

- (Luke 4:38,39) And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house.  And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they sought him for her.

39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered to them.

- (Lev 26:38,39) And you shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.

39 And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.

- (Lam 5:7) Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.

- (Deut 30:19) I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live:

- (1 King 15:3) And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.

- (1 Peter 1:18,19) For as much as you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

If a family has practiced occultism and some other severe sins, this can also function as a gateway. A person might end up in bondage because of the actions of their parents or their ancestors. One can also inherit occultic gifts – spirit healing, scrying, divination – which should not be confused with spiritual gifts given by God. One should unbound from such false gifts and ask God to take them away. A story of a woman is a good description of this:

From a young age, I had spiritual problems. They began when I realized I was a clairvoyant – I was able to see what was going to happen; I knew facts, people, and places. Someone revealed things of the past and future to me. It always scared me, as I could not control those situations and they became more frequent every day.

… At a later stage, I saw shadows in bright day light. I heard whispering voices calling for me. I saw strange shapes. I could not sleep at night; I saw nightmares and I heard chains rattling and voices, which told me to do things. I felt someone pulling me by my hair and throwing me against a wall. My dad was a heavy-built man, but even he could not hold me down in those situations, because I suddenly received great power. My mother held my hands so that I would not pull all my hair out.

… These days I attend the congregation. Remembering my past and looking at it now, I understand it all happened to me because my ancestors sacrificed my life to witchcraft. – Sandra (11)

Behind unbelief lies a demon spirit. When one has a hard time reading and understanding the Bible, and their mind feels fuzzy, it is all because of the devil who wants to keep people spiritually blind and unbelieving. There are also people who want to believe but cannot. In such cases we can tell powers causing fuzziness and unbelief to leave in the name of Jesus Christ.

- (2 Cor 4:3,4) But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:

4 In whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine to them.

- (Luke 8:11,12) Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then comes the devil, and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

A great example in the Bible of how one can be delivered from fuzziness is the example of the Gerasene man. He was entirely consumed by evil spirits, but when Jesus delivered him, he regained full control and clarity. He was an extreme case, but any bound person can go through a battle in their mind, which makes it difficult for them to understand the Bible and spiritual matters. We find the answer to deliverance when we confess our sins and then resist the devil in the name of Jesus:

- (Mark 5:1-15) And they came over to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the most high God? I adjure you by God, that you torment me not.

8 For he said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.

9 And he asked him, What is your name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

10 And he sought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

11 Now there was there near to the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

12 And all the devils sought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.

13 And immediately Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

Focus on your relationship with god!

- (John 3:19,20) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

- (Rom 13:12) The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

It is possible that a person might end up in bondage by evil spirits if they have lived deeply in sin. Practicing carnal desires and sins long enough, especially witchcraft and occultism, opens a gateway for the devil to enter a person’s life. It is a natural consequence to people drifting away from God.

What about deliverance from evil spirits? It is important not to focus on the spirits but to focus on one’s relationship with God. That is if a person can fix their relationship with God, they’ll begin to feel godly sorrow for their sins (2 Cor 7:10 For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world works death.) and will also reform from all their wrongdoings, which is the only way to get rid of evil spirits. One might not have to tell them to leave, as it is possible to feel deliverance right away. Sven Reichmann tell his observations from doing spiritual support:

Instead of evil spirits, let us focus on building a fuller connection with God, so that we can help people. Let us help them see their sins and break before God. When we renew and deepen the connection with God this way, we can calmly address the demons inside a person. In that way we do not need to resort to dramatic exorcism through coughing and vomiting. Spirits will leave this way without any unpleasant follow-ups. One can put our hands on the suffering person and tell distress, depression, anger and bitterness to leave in the name of Jesus. You do not necessarily need to talk anything about evil spirits. Usually, a person feels instant relief and begins to praise the Lord, who has freed them.

The less signs there are of a person breaking, the more certain we need to be about the Lord’s explicit command to use authority in deliverance. These kinds of situation are extremely rare in my experience, however. (12)

A proper basis for deliverance is to fix those areas, where we have broken against the will of God. Whether it be bitterness, self-hate, occultism, or any other sin, one must bring it to light, unbound from them, and confess them to God. Darkness, which is unconfessed sin, gives the devil the right to influence our lives, but if we confess our sins to God, this right is taken away from the devil. That is when it is easy to dispel.

Whereas, if a person is unrepentant and does not want to forgive or repent their sins, it is impossible to help them – the spirits may come back, even if they had been removed, and the person’s state might get even worse (Matt 12:43-45). They and everyone else must first fulfill God’s terms, for Him to be able to help us.

- (Matt 3:1,2,6) In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent you: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

- (Matt 4:17) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

- (Acts 2:38) Then Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

- (Acts 17:30) And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men every where to repent:

- (1 John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Sven Reichmann makes further comments about the matter. He tells about a man who was incredibly delivered from bitterness and other bondages. However, since the thoughts about suicide were unconfessed, the spirit of suicide was still able to affect him. This example shows how vital it is to confess one’s sins and have genuine remorse and repenting. When we address all the areas of life that need fixing and confess our sins to God, the devil no longer has the right affect our lives. After that it will be easier to banish them, or they might even leave on their own.

I remember this person who sought my help. He had many bondage -related symptoms, many harmful relationships in his life. He felt hate and bitterness towards many, and he lived in a chronical state of anxiousness and depression. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we went through his life and went on till he broke down. He prayed for forgiveness and deliverance from his hatred and bitterness. It was clear that his prayer came from deep contrition.

Afterwards I put must hands over him and told the dark spirits to leave. Without any theatrics his face lit up and his whole essence exuded immense relief.

Suddenly, I remembered that for a long time he had had thoughts about suicide. I placed my hand over him again and told the suicidal thoughts to leave. But this was something we had not discussed during our talk and those thoughts were not confessed to God. The spirit of suicide still had the right to affect him. The man jumped from his chair and was clearly about to attack me. But during the conversation and prayer he had already broken down so much and was delivered from so many sins that it was enough for one new command to make the spirit leave. However, it caused a coughing episode as it left.

Half a year later I met the man again. He reassured me that he had not once thought about suicide after that night. He had also been delivered from all other compulsions and slavery that night. Spiritual deliverance had truly worked. The fact that the spirit of suicide was able to resist back then, was because we had not addressed suicide in front of God, before addressing the spirits. (13)

What if in a process of deliverance, we focus on the devil and the demons, instead of a person’s connection to God? What happens if we seek information from the evil spirits? We are going to look at this more closely:

• A person will not be delivered. If their relationship with God is not fixed first and they do not confess their sins, it is difficult for them to be delivered. Satan knows his rights and we cannot remove him for good if the person does not repent their past and current sins. Unconfessed sins give Satan legal ground making it impossible to finish deliverance. It is futile. We must first subject ourselves to God; only after that can we oppose the devil. That is the order:

- (James 4:7) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

• When we read the Bible, we do not see Jesus talking to the spirits. Only on one occasion did he ask a spirit’s name (Mark 5:9), but most often he told them to be silent and leave. If we do things the way Jesus did, we cannot do them in the wrong way.

• Conversation with and asking information from evil spirits (e.g., asking how they have ended up inside a person) is questionable, because they are spirits of lies. We cannot trust their information, because they deceive people, or they can make people become intoxicated with power when in contact with them (Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject to you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.). Instead, the best source of information is the Holy Spirit. He can reveal what is necessary to a person in a process of deliverance.

• An important reason for not to converse with evil spirits is that it is the same as asking advice from a clairvoyant spirit! It is sin! It does not greatly differ from a session with a psychic conversing with false spirits. The Bible gives us a strong warning about this kind of activity:

- (Lev 19:31) Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

- Lev 20:6) And the soul that turns after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

Neil Anderson tells how he has found the right methods in deliverance work. He helps people to solve personal and spiritual conflicts and does not allow demons to express themselves. He also teaches people to resist the devil after confessing their sins. When we focus on people and help them repair their connection with God, it makes deliverance that much simpler:

I haven’t tried to drive out a demon in many years. But I have seen hundreds of people find freedom in Christ when I helped them solve their personal and spiritual conflicts if they genuinely repented and believed in God. I am no longer directly in contact with demons and I do not converse with them. I also do not allow them to express themselves during spiritual support. I only work to help people take responsibility and to subject themselves to God by resisting evil (James 4:7).

I have learnt from my own experience that if we try to resist evil before subjecting ourselves to God, we will generally end up in a fight. On the other hand, we can subject ourselves to God without resisting the devil, but then we are left in our chains. It is deeply saddening that most rehabilitation programs do neither. (14)

Rebecca Brown also talks about this. She tells that she does not allow demons to express themselves, and she also explains the significance of confessing one’s sins. If a person is not ready to give up their sins and repent them, we should not continue with the process of deliverance, or even start it. It will not help anyone:

Jesus gives His servants authority over demons in His name. Unfortunately, deliverance has gotten a very bad name in Christian congregations because it has been practiced in a non-biblical way. We all go through a learning process. I regret that I in my first book “He Came To Set The Captives Free”, my fight against spirits in Elaine happened because I did not do what I was supposed to do. The Lord demanded that I write about my mistakes, as well as my successes. I want to highlight that I do not talk to demons anymore, and I do not allow for any kind of physical appearances, as that sometimes happened when I began doing this work. If I had known what I know now, it would not have taken as long for Elaine to be free.

… Sins have been committed one by one. They should also be confessed one by one, as many as you can remember. When one confesses their sins and asks the Lord for forgiveness and for deliverance, this takes away any legal ground demons might have and hold on to. That is why this kind of deliverance is much quicker and easier than the process I went through with Elaine. Her complete deliverance took ten hours. After the Lord taught me how to act in situations of deliverance, I can now help someone, who has been as deeply affected by demons as Elaine was, become completely free in a few hours.

If you feel that the person does not genuinely regret their sins, do not continue with the deliverance process. Wait until the Holy Spirit brings true remorse into their life. It can take years. I emphasize once more: you must be extremely sensitive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in every individual case. (15)

Make sure that you believe! Before you seek deliverance in your life, make sure that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ! Turn to Him and ask Him to be a part of your life! According to the Bible He is the only one who holds the eternal life and only through Him can one become entirely free from all bondages. Do not reject Him, instead turn to Him and welcome Him into your life, and that way you will receive an eternal life:

- (Rev 3:20) Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

- (John 14:6) Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.

- (John 5:39,40) Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

40 And you will not come to me, that you might have life.

So, if you have turned to Jesus Christ and received Him in your life, you are a child of God and have eternal life. You have eternal life regardless of what you feel right now. Do not base your assurance of salvation on your ever-changing emotions, but rely on the word of the Bible and on Jesus Christ, just like the anchor of a ship is always thrown outside the ship, never inside.

- (John 1:12)  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name

 - (1 John 5:11-13) And this is the record, that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12 He that has the Son has life; and he that has not the Son of God has not life.

13 These things have I written to you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may believe on the name of the Son of God.

THE PRAYER OF SALVATION: Lord, Jesus, I turn to You. I confess that I have sinned against You and have not lived according to Your will. However, I want to turn away from my sins and follow You with all my heart. I also believe that my sins have been forgiven through Your atonement and I have received eternal life through You. I thank You for the salvation that You have given me. Amen.

Once you have said the salvation prayer and confessed Jesus as your Lord, you can then unbound from the devil in the following way, e.g. If it is difficult for you to say the following words, tell the devil to leave in the name Jesus Christ and say the words again:

In the name of Christ Jesus, I break away from your power, Satan, and from all the powers of darkness with which I have been involved and served. At the same time, I also break away from any witchcraft practiced by my forefathers and my parents, and I hand over my life to Jesus Christ who is now my Lord and my Savior!"

Giving your life to God. Once you have welcomed Jesus Christ into your life and said the prayer to be rid of Satan’s grip, remember to then give all your life to God! Do not only seek for a way out of your troubles, give yourself wholly to God and tell Him that you want to follow His will and Jesus Christ with your whole heart! If your goal is only to feel relief and not find out what is God’s plan for your life, you have a wrong approach. You might lose your soul for such an attitude, as Jesus said:

- (Matt 16:24-26) Then said Jesus to his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

25 For whoever will save his life shall lose it: and whoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

R.A. Torrey has explained this as well. He emphasizes how important it is to give your whole life to Jesus Christ:

Not understanding that Jesus is both our Lord and King, as well as our Redeemer has led many Christians’ lives on the wrong path from the beginning… Nothing is more important to getting a proper beginning in a life with Christ than unconditional surrendering to Jesus with our thoughts and with our entire being. Say it from your heart and keep saying it: everything for Jesus!

Many end up cast away because they were scared of this wholehearted surrender. They would want to serve Jesus, but only with half of their heart; would want to give only a part of them and their fortune. If we hold on to something that should be given to Jesus, we are going to receive misery, stumbling stones and fallings.

Life that is completely given to the Lord will bring joy in every journey. If you have not yet done so, do it today. Go be alone and kneel before God and say: “everything to Jesus” and do it genuinely. Say it with a sincere mind, from the depths of your heart; stay before Him, until it becomes clear to you what it means to you and what you will do. The one who takes this step the right way, will grow in a miraculous way. If you have already taken this step, do it again many times. It always has a new meaning and it will bring about new blessings. This wholehearted surrender holds the key to all treasures of divine truth. (16)

Confessing sins and unbounding

- (1 John 1:7,9) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleans us from all sin.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

- (Prov 28:13) He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.

When looking for deliverance, the key element is confessing one’s sins and unbounding from all wrongful things. A person might be delivered simply through this without any need to focus on dark spirits. Corrie Ten Boom tells her own experience:

In the same way as Elisha sent 'the son of the prophet' back to the place where he had lost the axe and where the miracle took place (2 King 6:5,6), I too send people back to the place where they have, being guilty of sin, opened their hearts to the devil. I ask Jesus our Savior to close the door where they have opened it. Firstly, it is necessary to convince people that they really have sinned! Deut 18:10-13 proves this. Confession is necessary, and after it we can claim that the precious promises of purifying belong also to us (John 1:7-9). How many people I saw freed when they acted obediently according to this word!  (17)

Below I have provided some example prayers and commands that can be said. They address different aspects of life, through which the devil might have had access to impact someone’s life. It might help if you write down all your sins in life that you can remember in timely order. A system that goes through all different aspects of life will make deliverance easier. The more sins you bring to light by confessing them to God, the less leeway and opportunity the devil will have to impact your life. Whereas, not repenting and not confessing your sins gives the devil a chance to still hold you in bondage. If the sins you have committed are not included in the following list, you can confess them separately and tell the devil to leave.

Oh Lord, Father, forgive me for taking part in spiritualism, spirit healing, etc. Thank You that You forgive me and cleanse me of all unrighteousness through the blood of Your Son Jesus.

Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God that I have taken part in séances, spirit healing, etc. Now you have no more legal right in these areas, because through the blood of Jesus I have been forgiven. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

Oh Lord, Father, forgive me for emptying my mind and making it passive for it is not Your will. Thank You that You forgive me and cleanse me of all unrighteousness through the blood of Your Son Jesus.

Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God that I have emptied my mind and made it passive. Now you have no more legal right in this area, because through the blood of Jesus I have received forgiveness from God. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

Oh Lord, Father, forgive me for my wrong connections to the spirit world! I ask You to take away those supernatural gifts and abilities that are not from You and also all such connection with the spirit world that is not from You. Thank You that You cleanse my body, soul and spirit of all unrighteousness through the blood of Jesus. In the name of Jesus, amen

Now, in the name of Jesus Christ, I command all evil spirits who gave me the ability to be in connection with the spirit world to leave my life immediately and never to return!

Oh Lord, Father, forgive me for interfering with relationships outside marriage, pornography, and other such sins! Thank You that You forgive me and cleanse me of all unrighteousness through the blood of your Son Jesus.

Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God that I have interfered with wrong relations and pornography that are not the will of God. Now you no longer have a legal right in this respect, because through the blood of Jesus I have received forgiveness from God. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

Oh Lord, Father, forgive me for my bitterness and my accusations towards... Thank you that You forgive me and You cleanse me of all unrighteousness through the blood of Your Son Jesus.

Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God that I have been bitter towards...  Now you no longer have a legal right in this regard, because through the blood of Jesus I have received forgiveness from God. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

Oh Lord, Father, forgive me for my self-hatred, my suicidal thoughts, and my self-pity! Thank You that You forgive me and cleanse me of all unrighteousness through the blood of Your Son Jesus.

Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God my self-hatred, suicidal thoughts and self-pity. Now you no longer have a legal right in this regard, because through the blood of Jesus I have received forgiveness from God. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

" Oh Lord, Father, forgive me my pride and envy towards others. Forgive me my rebelliousness and forgive me for not having respected those who You have placed above me. Thank You that You forgive me and cleanse me of all unrighteousness through the blood of Your Son Jesus.

" Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God my pride, my envy and my rebelliousness. Now you no longer have a legal right in this regard, because through the blood of Jesus I have received forgiveness from God. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

"Lord, Father, I bring before You all the fears, shame and feelings of inferiority that have come to me after traumatic events. Thank You for letting me be free through Your Son Jesus Christ, as He said: “Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke on you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matt 11:28-30)

" Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God all the fears, shame and feelings of inferiority that were caused by traumatic events in school, at home, or in an accident. Now you no longer have a legal right in this regard, because through the blood of Jesus these things have been forgiven and their influence on me has ended.. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

"Oh Lord, Father, I confess to You that it is wrong to worry about things that cannot be changed. Thank You that I can bring all my worries to You and have faith that You will take care of me, and I do not need to worry about and be depressed about the future.

"Satan and you demons, I have confessed to God my unnecessary worrying and depression and I have let go of them. Now you have no legal right in this area, because I have been forgiven for these things through the blood of Jesus and their effect on me has ended. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ, all spirits of depression and despair to leave me and to never return."

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break all curses that have been uttered against me. At the same time, I command all demonic powers and illnesses in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings and my family, and never to return.

And Oh Lord, beloved Heavenly Father, I ask that You would give me protection against hatred and that You break all ties between me and the attacks of the spirit world. In addition, I want to bless those who have spoken ill about me and cursed me. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Oh Lord, Father, I confess to You all the sins of my ancestors and parents such as witchcraft, spiritualism, spirit healing, immorality, false oaths, etc. and I break away from them. Thank You that I may be free from the effect of these sins and from all the evil spirits through the atoning work of Jesus. Thank You that my spiritual inheritance comes from Christ and not from the sins of my ancestors. Amen

"Satan and you evil spirits, I have confessed to God the sins of my ancestors and parents and the false oaths and broken away from them. Now you no longer have any legal right in this regard, because through the blood of Jesus these matters have been forgiven and their effect has been broken. Therefore, I command you now in the name of Jesus Christ to leave me and my surroundings, and never to return!

the battle after. After a person has gone through all aspects of their life, confessed all their sins that they can think of, and told the devil and demons to leave, they might still experience some symptoms of the past: vertigo, loss of consciousness, headache, feeling ill, hearing noise and voices in their head, and other symptoms. This might be the case, especially, if the person has been involved with occultism, or committed some other serious sins, or their family has been involved with those sins. In such cases there a few things that should be kept in mind.

Belief and feelings are different.. When one has been deeply involved in occultism he might have to fight for weeks, even months afterwards. Even though he has been delivered, he might not feel peace because the devil continues to harass him. It is a part of the growing process that a person may have to experience because he has driven his mind into passivity before and has allowed room for the devil.

Remaining firm in faith and resisting the devil are extremely important. When man actively resists the devil and maintains a firm will, evil powers will eventually be forced to give up. They will be forced to give up because they are no longer allowed any room.

In her book "Pyhien sota" (War on the Saints, p. 83), Jessie Penn-Lewis wrote about the importance of keeping a firm attitude, "When the believer keeps his mind in a normal condition of action, he should sustain firm willpower, i.e., ‘I want my mind not to be passive, I want to completely control and use all my abilities, I want to be clear of all that comes from the enemy’. This indicates man’s choice and not his decision to do these things. The powers of darkness do not care for mere choosing, but they will surrender powerless when the willpower is manifested in a determined decision. God gives us power to walk in the right direction, if we choose the right way."

In the same way, the following verses show the significance of resistance and endurance. If we resist and endure, we can achieve true freedom:

- (Eph 6:13) Why take to you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

- (Hebr 10:35,36) Cast not away therefore your confidence, which has great recompense of reward.

36 For you have need of patience, that, after you have done the will of God, you might receive the promise.

- (James 4:7) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

- (1 Peter 5:8,9) Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:

9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brothers that are in the world.

- (Mark 16:17) And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

- (Matt 4:10) Then said Jesus to him, Get you hence, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.

- (Rev 12:11) And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives to the death.

Another thing to remember is that it is good to distinguish between belief and feelings. Deliverance is always based on belief, not feelings. ”We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7), and feelings are often a complete opposite to what we have in the Christ.

It is especially common to look to feelings when the delivered person feels physical -and other symptoms similar to their past symptoms. They might think that they have not been truly delivered and saved, and that the dark spirits have returned.

It is good to remember, however, that we need to have faith that the evil spirits are gone. If someone has already confessed their sins, been forgiven for them through the blood of Jesus, and told the evil spirits to leave, then they should really be gone – it is a matter of faith, not feeling.

On the other hand, it is possible for someone to experience similar symptoms to what they had before, but now from the outside – it is different. Every believer can sometimes end up being attacked – Jesus also went through it in the desert (Matt 4:1-11) – but that does not mean that the person would be under the influence of badness.

The following verses attest to God’s protection. If you happen to struggle with this at the moment, it is better for you to trust the verses below, rather than to rely on your feelings, which keep quickly changing and alternating:

- (1 John 4:4) You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

- (Ps 121:7) The LORD shall preserve you from all evil: he shall preserve your soul.

- (Rom 8:38,39) For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

- (Col 1:13) Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son

Reading the Word of God

- (Eph 6:16,17) Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

The verses above describe the shield of faith with which a person can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The word of God is also a tool of grace in deliverance and the fight. Whenever we read the word of the Bible – especially verses that explain our position in Christ and as a child of God – we can experience increasing freedom, when ‘the truth shall make you free’, as Jesus said (John 8:32). This goes especially to understanding true righteousness and the grace of God, when we are freed from false self-accusations and enter a new level in our relationship with God.

The word of the Bible can also help free us from occultism and other devilish tortures. Reading verses that tell of the defeat of the devil and his destiny in hell have been found especially good for this purpose. (Rebecca Brown worked among many people who were seriously bound. She wrote in her book (Prepare for War), that the Book of Revelation Chapter 18 and the last two chapters of the Revelation are especially good.). The following verses describing the defeat of the devil are also good. If reading these verses is difficult for you and you fear that you may lose consciousness, you can immediately resist the devil in the name of Jesus and continue reading again:

- (1 John 3:8) ... For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

- (Col 2:15) And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

- (Luke 10:17-20) And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject to us through your name.

18 And he said to them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.

19 Behold, I give to you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject to you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

- (Luke 11:20-22) But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come on you.

21 When a strong man armed keeps his palace, his goods are in peace:

22 But when a stronger than he shall come on him, and overcome him, he takes from him all his armor wherein he trusted, and divides his spoils.

- (Matt 4:10) Then said Jesus to him, Get you hence, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.

- (Matt 25:41) Then shall he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels

- (Rev 20:10) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

- Chapters 18-22 of the Revelation

Are there any other gateways? Sometimes the problem might be that we do not know what is causing the problems. The cause might be occultic objects in the home or an inheritance. If these objects are not removed, or evil spirits that have come through family legacy are not disclaimed, deliverance might be prevented. Systematic search for gateways and for confessions helps solve such problems.

Derek Prince: One day in 1970 I thought about the Bible verse: ”Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be a cursed thing like it: but you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.…” (Deut 7:26). I walked around my house and I realized that I owned many “idols”. That is when I made a decision that I believe has had an important effect on the direction of my future life and work: I decided that I would not possess anything that would degrade Jesus Christ or open a door for demonic influence.

I threw away some items inherited from my parents: four beautifully decorated antique dragons and a large pile of Chinese antiquities depicting dragons. …I cleaned my library from any books that praised occultism.

… My actions had a dramatic effect on my surrounding spiritual atmosphere. It was like I had stepped from the dark into the light. (18)

The works of the flesh. Not all problems stem from the devil and demons. The greatest reason is our flesh, which lures us into sin. Even when all enemy powers have been sent away, we still retain a temptation to do sin, and we must choose how we live. Carnal acts might open doors for demons (e.g., witchcraft is a carnal act), but if we journey in the Spirit, we can avoid both sin and giving opportunities to the devil. Paul and Jesus taught about this:

- (Gal 5:16,19-23) This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, jealousies, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Contentions, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

- (Mark 7:21-23) For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
